The drive over hadn’t taken long. Mike’s studio apartment wasn’t far from Dylan’s house on the lake. Ten minutes later Dylan was knocking on Mike’s door. He cast a quick glance around. The area Mike had settled in wasn’t the best, and anyone wearing decent shoes was in danger of losing them. Trite, but true.

The peeling paint on the door vibrated as Dylan banged again.

“Hang on!” Mike’s muffled call came from inside the shit-sized apartment followed by a crash.

Dylan tensed, thinking he should have brought Sam after all.

The door flung open and Mike stood huffing on the other side like he’d run a marathon. His face was red, and sweat had slicked his hair into spikes. His dark brown eyes were flat…wild. Dylan took a step back but, before he could open his mouth to utter an excuse for leaving, Mike grabbed his arm and hauled him into the apartment.

Dylan took a good look around, figuring at some point that he might see something that would give him leverage against Mike in negotiations. But what he saw ran his blood cold.

The furniture was toppled together. A gas can sat to one side with the spout stopper hanging free, taunting Dylan with the certainty that the sickly sweet smell of gas was not his imagination.

Mike shoved him, steering Dylan toward a chair still perched on the patch of linoleum that passed as the kitchen floor. Dylan swiped at Mike’s hold on his shirt. “What the hell are you fucking doing, man?”

“Wouldn’t let it go. Had to push. Had to try and crucify me,” Mike muttered under his breath as he jerked Dylan along, and then slammed him into the chair. He bent over to glare into Dylan’s face. “Do you know what they’re going to do to me when they find out they’re not getting their money? They will carve me up.”

The rage was rolling off Mike in waves. Dylan knew he didn’t have much of a window to get out alive. He jumped to his feet, bent on getting the fuck away from there. He fought at Mike’s grip, catching at the rope in Mike’s free hand. Panic bubbled in Dylan’s stomach, nausea threatening to ruin his bid for freedom. “You’ve lost your mind.”

Oh fuck. Wrong thing to tell the crazy guy.

Mike’s face became redder, if that was even possible. “Fucker! Don’t you talk about me like that. You’re so self-righteous. You know nothing of what it’s like to need something. I needed that money. I could have earned it all back in no time flat if you’d let me do what I wanted with the restaurant.”

“What? Burn it to the ground?” Dylan’s laugh was a little hysterical even to his own ears. Mike’s eyes narrowed and he backhanded Dylan, sending him reeling. Dylan spit a mouthful of blood on the floor then continued, “Oh, wait. You’ve done that.”

“I needed the fucking money!”

“You could have just asked for it. I would have loaned it to you. Why do you need the money?” Dylan was grasping at straws.
